How to Add an Email Signature to Gmail

You can have Gmail automatically add your signature block to any emails you send. Note that this will only be for emails sent using Google’s Gmail app on the Web. If you have a Gmail account within your email program on your PC or other device, you will need to use that program’s settings to create a default signature block.

Below is how to create your signature block within Gmail:

  1. Open Gmail settings.

  2. Click on “See all settings” under “Quick settings.”

  3. Scroll down until you find the “Signature:” area and click the “Create new” button.

  4. In the window that pops up, enter a name for your signature. This is not the signature itself, but rather a label you give to the signature so that you can find or edit it later. When finished, click the “Create” button.

  5. A new window will pop up. On the left side you will see the name you gave to your signature. (In the image below, I named it “My Default.”) If there is more than one signature name shown, be sure the one you want is selected. In the typing area to the right of that, type exactly what you want in your signature area.

  6. Once you have created your signature, you will need to tell Gmail where to apply it. Otherwise, it will not show on any emails. Below where you entered your signature is the heading, “Signature defaults,” where you can choose to add the signature for new emails and for emails you reply to or forward. Change “No signature” for one or both of those email types to the name of the signature you just created (or to another signature you created earlier, if desired).

  7. Scroll all the way down and click the “Save Changes” button.

Note that if you forget to save your changes and try to navigate to another page, Gmail will alert you that you are about to lose your changes. If you want to save your work, click the “Cancel” button and then click the “Save Changes” button. To discard them instead, click the “OK” button.
